Pedagogy

Personal Philosophy

  • Don't lecture, coach.
  • Try to have the students "discover" the rules through investigation as oppose to just giving them the rules and having them apply them over and over again.
  • Learning should be engaging.
  • If something isn't working, don't try to force it, and try something else.
  • Try things you've never done before
  • Don't be afraid to be silly in class

GRASS Method (Thanks Nakesha)

GRASS method for solving word problems

  • G = Given (what info is given in the question?)
  • R = Required (what are you required to find?)
  • A = Analysis (what tools are needed to solve the problem? E.g. formulas, operations)
  • S = Solution (show how you solve the problem; writing it down)
  • S = Statement (write a concluding statement to answer the question)

Tips for Teaching (See Lesson 08)

  1. Start with something they know
  2. Ask questions
  3. Lead students to reasonable explanations
  4. Avoid magic steps
